Manufacturer: MSD / Merck Sharp & Dohme
Pharmaceutical name: Simvastatin
Pack: 10 pills (40 mg)
Zocor contains Simvastatin, a medication that lowers cholesterol levels to treat high cholesterol by reducing elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the bloodstream, which helps decrease the risk of heart disease.

Cholesterol plays a vital role in the body by assisting in functions like forming cell membranes, producing specific hormones, and transporting fat-soluble vitamins throughout the body. However, when cholesterol levels exceed what the body requires, it can accumulate in artery walls, leading to blockages and increasing the risk of heart disease. Simvastatin found in Zocor decreases cholesterol production in the liver by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, which is crucial for cholesterol synthesis. Zocor lowers "bad" cholesterol (LDL) levels that can cause arteries to harden and become obstructed while also raising "good" cholesterol (HDL) levels that aid in unblocking hardened arteries. It is important to note that Zocor specifically targets cholesterol produced in the liver and does not affect dietary cholesterol, which is why maintaining a low-fat diet is essential even while taking Zocor.

The recommended dosage of Zocor (Simvastatin) ranges from 10 mg to 40 mg and is taken once daily in the evening with or without food. Treatment typically begins with a daily dose of 10 or 20 mg, but those at high risk for heart disease may start at 40 mg daily. Simvastatin is only prescribed for patients who have been on a long-term regimen of 80 mg (for instance, for 12 months or longer) without signs of muscle toxicity, as this higher dose is linked to an increased risk of muscle-related side effects, including rhabdomyolysis. Patients currently tolerating the 80 mg dose of simvastatin who need to start a drug that interacts negatively with simvastatin or is subject to a dosing limit should be transitioned to a different statin or a statin-based treatment with a lower risk of drug interactions. Those requiring more than a 40 mg dose should also switch to an alternative medication.

All medications can lead to side effects, although many individuals experience none or only mild effects. Consult your doctor if any of the most common side effects persist or prove bothersome: Constipation.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these severe side effects: serious allergic reactions (such as rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; dark urine; muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (with or without fever and fatigue); pale stools; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; severe or ongoing stomach pain; yellowing of skin or eyes.
